Summer Schools – A Taste Of Life At Sussex University
This week, the Universities of Sussex and Brighton, in partnership with Aimhigher in the South East, are giving school children from all over the South East a taste of life at university.
The Year 11 students, who don’t have any family experience of higher education, will be embarking on a ‘Cracking Crime course at the University of Brighton or ‘FutureActive’ at the University of Sussex.
Aimhigher Summer Schools aim to show learners what life is really like at university, from making new friends and adjusting to unfamiliar surroundings, to learning about the types of courses they could take at university and opportunities available to them when they leave school.
Cracking Crime
Summer school attendees will be looking at all aspects of crime at the University of Brighton, including studying music, media and crime as well as civil liberties and environmental issues.
FutureActive
Attendees at the University of Sussex will be investigating how the media reports on developments in science and technology. Both schools involve a lot of hands-on experience and sessions with academics.
Dr John Selby, Director – Education and Participation, Higher Education Funding Council for England, said
attending an Aimhigher summer school can be a life-changing experience, opening doors to a world of often unimagined opportunity and leading to better informed choices.
On Wednesday, the two summer schools finish with graduation ceremonies where the students get to present their achievements in front of their peers, university staff and students.
